Truck ends up next to train line after A55 crash

A pick-up truck which landed next to a railway line after an accident on the A55 between Llandudno Junction and Mochdre

A PICK-UP truck landed just feet from the main coast railway line after it was flipped over the crash barrier in a three vehicle smash.

Trains were delayed and there was traffic chaos as police closed the A55 in the eastbound direction after the Toyota truck flew over the safety barrier as it travelled between Llandudno Junction and Colwyn Bay.

It rolled and landed within a metre of the railway line but thankfully no trains were passing at the time.

A number of train services were delayed due to the proximity of the truck to the track.

Domestic violence in N.Wales almost doubled when England lost in World Cup

Thomas Muller scores Germany's fourth goal against England in the second round of World Cup 2010

INCIDENTS of domestic violence almost doubled on the day England were knocked out of the World Cup.

Police revealed there were 45 reports of domestic violence when England exited the tournament on June 27 after losing 4-1 to Germany. This compared to 25 on the same day last year.

But overall the number of attacks on women were down on previous years, said North Wales Police.

Last month, the force launched Operation Serenity, a campaign to raise awareness of domestic abuse during the 2010 World Cup.

Budget cuts will hit Wales hardest, Cheryl Gillan admits

WELSH Secretary Cheryl Gillan yesterday admitted Wales was likely to be hit hardest by budget cuts.

Quizzed about what she was doing to protect the nation, which relies on state spending more than England, the cabinet minister said there was an acceptance across government there could be a disproportionate impact.

Facing the House of Commons Welsh Affairs select committee for the first time Mrs Gillan insisted she  would hold talks “if necessary”.

She said: “There is an acceptance across government that there could be a disproportionate effect on Wales and therefore in budget discussions we are looking at the impact on the Welsh budget.

Halkyn student wins Harrow scholarship to meet king of Jordan

Tom Pearson-Jones

A HARD-WORKING student is getting an all-expenses-paid visit to Jordan, courtesy of the country’s royal family.

For the past year Halkyn lad Tom Pearson-Jones has been head of one of the houses at the world-famous Harrow School, where two young members of the Jordanian royal family were pupils.

The late King Hussein of Jordan was a student there and when he died in 1999 he left money in his will for a pupil – usually the Head of Park House – to visit the Middle Eastern kingdom.
